Notre-Dame de Paris
Notre-Dame de Paris is a remarkable tourist attraction in the fourth arrondissement of Paris. This catholic cathedral is a colourful example of Gothic architecture, probably one of the best in the world. The name of the cathedral can be translated as ‘Our Lady’.
One can see the use of so called ‘flying buttress’ which is an arched exterior support in the architecture of the cathedral. It is interesting that Notre-Dame was the first building on which this construction was used. The construction of the cathedral began in 1163 during the reign of Louis VII, and was completed only by about 1345. During the construction period a lot of architects and artists worked on this project which can be additionally confirmed by the presence of different styles at different heights of the west front and towers.
Since 1991 s ten-year-long program had begun to restore the building of the cathedral. The south tower holds a 13-ton bell which is rung on special occasions only. And the top of one of the towers offers a great view over Paris, the river, upper parts of the cathedral and much more.
