Places Around St Peter's Basilica
St Peter's Basilica
St Peter’s Basilica is located on the territory of the city of Vatican and is famous for housing the largest interior of any Christian church in the world. It can house up to 60 000 people at once. St Peter’s is a symbolic ‘Mother church’ of the Catholic Church. It is named in favour of Saint Peter, one of the twelve apostles, who became the first Bishop of Rome and was the first in the line of the papal succession. It is believed that his tomb is right below the altar of this basilica.
There are over 100 tombs within St Peter’s Basilica beneath the Basilica. 91 tombs refer to Popes of different times.
Probably the most impressive about the Basilica is its Dome from which a breathtaking view on the city greets. Upon your choice, you can use either lift or a staircase.
