Museu do Azulejo (Tile Museum)
Museu do Azulejo, or simply Tile Museum, is one of the numerous museums in Lisbon. Though it’s located a bit far from the city centre, yet easy access by taxi.
This museum features a rich collection of tiles representing five centuries of decorative ceramic tiles. It’s notable that the collection of Museu do Azulejo is the only of its kind in the world. The building of the museum is originally a monastery of the Madre de Deus Convent which interior was fully renovated in the 15th century after the Great Earthquake to become one of the most splendid in the city.
Probably one of the best-known masterpieces in the museum is a blue and white composition of 1300 tiles, 23 metres in length displaying Lisbon’s cityscape. This great tile was made in 1738, and was confirmed to be the longest piece of tile in the country by then.
